Based on already existing smart city models and strategies in all the Nordic countries, we want to join forces and develop a common Nordic smart city model. This model will describe and show how Nordic cities and municipalities can take the lead in collaboration processes and benefit from digital technologies while at the same time protecting and promoting the interest of their citizens. In the current covid-19 situation, this is more crucial than ever in order to stimulate the development smart, sustainable and resilient communities of the future.
It will focus on what the qualities of good governance of digital technologies for city organisations are. In other words, it will form a narrative of what constitutes a Nordic smart city – making it globally accessible as a framework for cities and municipalities around the world to understand and learn from its purpose and qualities. And as this is the first time a region, like the Nordic region, is joining forces to develop a common smart city model, we believe that it can contribute to a lot of positive attention to the Nordics as a leading smart city region.
Developing a joint Nordic smart city model can serve as a platform for collaboration across borders, sectors and disciplines – pointing out a common direction for smart city development. It is also important to underline that even though the cities in the Nordic Smart City Network are frontrunners of this initiative, smaller cities and municipalities can benefit from a joint Nordic smart city model, serving as a guideline helping to prioritise focal areas and direction for their smart city initiatives.
Project timeframe: June 2020 to April 2021.
Project Aims:
- To strengthen the Nordic brand as a leading smart city region, as frontrunners for a people-centred smart city model
- To build a platform for collaboration between Nordic and international stakeholders, as well as contribute to boosting export of Nordic products and services
- To demonstrate how Nordic cities and municipalities can benefit from digital technologies while protecting and promoting the interest of their citizens
- To demonstrate how Nordic cities and municipalities can take the lead and show direction in cross-sectorial smart city processes, advancing towards more sustainable, resilient and inclusive cities and communities
- To contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing SDG 9, 11 and 17.
